BUENOS AIRES MUSEUMS
Buenos Aires Museums – There are numerous museums in the city, with the finest being in the north barrios, Retiro, Recoleta, Palermo and Belgrano. Some incorporate art galleries into their exhibits while others have more specific subjects such as the football museums in La Boca. Remember, many museums are closed on Mondays and in the winter months of January and February and take cash to pay admission fees. Some public buildings require some form of photo identification to enter. If you require an English-speaking guide then phone ahead to book one.

Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Issac Fernandez Blanco

This fascinating museum offers a huge and varied collection of Spanish-American art over two floors. The neo-colonial building is worth the visit alone and if you get tired looking at the art, then venture out into the cool gardens that offer an oasis in a bustling city. Highlights of the exhibitions include Ecuadorian wooden figures and Bolivian craftsman displays. Admission AR$3, free on Thursdays.
Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

The first floor of this museum contains the country’s most extensive collection of nineteenth and twentieth century Argentinean artwork while downstairs is an unmissable international collection comprising of works by Goya, Rubens, Van Gogh and Monet to name a few. Admission is free.
Museo de la Pasion Boquense

Opening hours – daily, 10am–6pm. Guided tour of stadium is hourly from 11am – 5pm.
A must for all football fanatics, this is the stadium where the revered Diego Maradona used to play. Everywhere you look, La Boca fans make their presence felt by displaying the football team’s colours and the museum puts the club’s successes into a larger, national context. Admission is AR$7,90 for the museum or tour only and AR$12,90 for the museum and tour.
Museo Historico Nacional

A useful and interesting insight into the city’s often turbulent history. Covers pre-Columbian, conquest and Argentinean periods and features a number of artworks and maps. Admission is AR$2.
Museo de Armas de la Nacion
Avenida Santa Fe 702, y Maipu

Opening hours – Tue-Fri, 11am – 7pm; Sat and Sun, 2pm-6pm. Closed on Mondays and in January and February.
For all military buffs, this is an extensive collection of armoury, weapons and military uniforms dating back to medieval times and the Wars of Independence. Admission is AR$2.
Museo de la Casa Rosada

Located on the south side of the famous Presidential Palace, there are large displays of portraits, hats and so on that once belonged to past Argentinean presidents. A cavern-like corridor leads to the moat and a good view of the Casa Rosada’s east façade. Admission is free.
