Generous government grants has meant that the fringe theatre scene is booming so head to the San Telmo district to see the factories, bars, houses and bookshops that have been converted into makeshift theatres.
There has also been a resurgence in the popular Revista Portena cabaret show where showgirls and slapstick comediennes share the stage with people reciting monologues, sketches and satires of politicians.
Teatro Cervantes

State run and 80-years old, this grand, old-fashioned theatre contains two auditoriums showing Latin-American, dance, foreign works and Spanish theatre. Tickets range from AR$5-10 and the theatre is closed in January.
Teatro Colon

One of the world’s greatest opera houses, with almost perfect acoustics according to the experts. Opera, ballet and classical music is all on offer with 10 full opera’s being produced every year with at least five performances of each taking place. Even if you don’t want to see a production, make sure you book a tour and explore the great building anyway. Tickets range from AR$5 (standing only) to AR$100+ (for boxes). Closed January.

This grand venue has a 3,500 person capacity and is the place to see the most popular musicals and live performers such as Boy George!

The oldest theatre in the city is still producing numerous productions after 140 years. Come and see a range of classic works and Spanish music concerts with tickets ranging from AR$10-35.

An impressive modern venue that houses several auditoriums, you can see the best contemporary dance-troops here as well as childrens’ theatre, Argentinean plays and classics from the pen of Pinter. Tickets are AR$2,50 – 8.
